Call me a rebel, but my favorite comic characters were never the big names. Spidey and wolverine are good gents and all but give me a Hawkeye any day. I actually had a spare moment to draw whatever the hell I felt like drawing so I went with a couple of my favorite heroes. Danny Rand, The Immortal Iron Fist & Black Bolt, real name Blackigar Boltigon, which I have to say is an awesome but impressively weak bit of pseudonymery. Here they are...

Just in time for Comic-Con 2011! I am quite excited. The book is a collection of all the images I created for the Gasmask A Day project, plus some special additions of original gasmask-themed paintings. Perfect bound, 76 full color page softcover.

I'll admit, I didn't think I would find much of interest in Phoenix. Typical Californian snobbery I suppose. To my fortunate surprise, Phx is rad. Excellent people and many new friends, great art scene, and while I didn't see much of the midday inferno, the warm nights were incredible. I'm definitely looking forward to next year. I sold several originals, here's a couple I completed there, both sold to show-goers, thanks gentlemen.

The relationship became awkward though, eventually turning them into dubious compatriots in a daring escape attempt. They are mortal enemies of course, and any tenuous accord they have is ephemeral at best.

This is headed to the Monsters Vs. Robots show at OhNo!Doom in Chicago.

Birds have hollow bones and minimal weight distributed about their tiny bodies. Our size would require not only an enormous wingspan, but really excessive musculature across the back. I saw a duck at Safeway today, eagerly followed by a mallard drake. I was looking at them because you don't often observe ducks at Safeway, seeing as how they have no place to carry a club card with which to utilize sale prices. The drake looked back at me like I was some weird fucker. It made me wonder how many other times birds see people in places they don't belong. As arbitrary as that may be, it may seem as odd to a crow to see a hang glider as it would be for you to find a robin in your shower. Thankfully birds don't speak any human languages, or else we might hear "what the fuck are you doing?" far more often.

Honestly, if you were last person alive, how long do you think it would be before you gave up on wearing clothes all together? Granted, first few weeks would be a shopping spree, with styles ranging from head to toe Gaultier to the best armageddon soldier I can be. But after months of searching for other survivors to no avail, I would soon wonder why I needed to look so rad. I give it a year before I start really letting myself go and wearing all flannel. I'd probably migrate someplace warm, San Diego's nice, but it gets hot, and flannel gets clingy. I'm sure my first nude foraging foray is exactly when I'd finally find the remants of humanity, but I think that kind of sets the terms for our relationship. I'll be the naked one. And if they happen to be naked as well, then I'll know they're my kind of people.

This drawing is the amalgam of two memories; I shaved a blue-haired girls head with a pair of scissors in the dark when I was 19 years old and my father's death from Glioblastoma. When I was a kid I was fascinated by Ahkenaten and Nefertiti. The idea of a high leader attempting to alter the way an entire nation thought and felt was astounding. I once had the opportunity to ask friends of my father’s if, given this generations near apathy towards the U.S. invasion of Iraq, they felt like they had failed. They were a little bewildered by the question. The successes of their generation later occurred to me. While I’d wager that, war protest or not, most hippies were probably in it for the sex and drugs, even that behavior was in complete defiance of societal standards. Even long hair was a statement against the establishment, and seeing large groups of people going against the establishment really gave a sense of something important happening. I believe we weren’t as significantly rebellious a generation for two reasons. The first being, despite very similar circumstances including the invasion of a small country and a secretive government over extending their power; there's no draft, so the war doesn't affect most people on a personal level. They may be tapping our phones but it's a horrible thing that’s happening far, far away. The second reason is that I think it’s much harder to rebel these days. Granted, it’s much easier to spread a dissident word, but a funny haircut and t-shirt against the mann just isn’t as effective as it once was. As soon as you can equip your rebel front with gear from the mall, I think you’re movement is in trouble. I’m hoping our children find something truly radical to be a part of. I honestly can’t think of anything I’d be really offended by, but maybe when my son is uploading his consciousness into a koala in protest to terrascaping Mars we can have a good old-fashion father & son/koala argument.

I've recently been wondering about why a pacifist vegan would be so obsessed with the iconography of violence. It's true though, whenever I'm faced with an empty hand my first thought to fill it is a switchblade or .22 caliber snub nose. I'm a musician but I don't like composing instruments, a painter but I don't like painting brushes. Seems the things I love are the last things I'm willing to draw. Perhaps it's the taboo; guns are so abhorrent to me that they've developed some forbidden appeal. Then again I find robots and monkeys in no way disagreeable but I'm never shy about drawing them. Perhaps my lack of ownership of these things is accountable. Maybe one day my robot and pet monkey will be playing with my Luger P08 and I'll have lost interest in drawing any of them. Yet, I still draw a lot of girls and I am now the proud owner of one (shout out to the Mrs.). She owns me, at least. Well, maybe that's it, perhaps I have an immutable self-effacing neurosis that guns, knives, monkeys, and robots will come to their senses and leave me.

Call me gullible, but despite what Steven Hawking says I believe we've been visited by aliens. Belief may be too strong a word actually.
